CIPC Overview

The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) was established in May 2011. Although a new entity, CIPC incorporated the former Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office (CIPRO) and a unit in the dti’s Corporate and Consumer Regulation (CCRD) division, namely the Office of Companies and Intellectual Property Enforcement (OCIPE).

In today’s globalized, hypercompetitive economy, a nation’s wealth is significantly influenced by its business activity, the economic inclusion of its citizens as well as its’ level of innovation, as measured by the Intellectual Property that is developed and registered by its citizens. CIPC therefore has another important element to its mandate. It administers, regulates and protects South Africa’s Intellectual Property assets in accordance with the provisions of a range of legislation enacted over a number of decades. Creating an enabling environment for Intellectual Property has been the subject of much research and legislative reform and this process will continue to gain momentum in the next five years.

Since its inception, CIPC has faced many challenges. These have included ICT systems unable to cope with organisational requirements, a large backlog of company registration applications and an organisational culture that has been insufficiently oriented towards service delivery. In its first year of operation the CIPC has focused on addressing these challenges and should be congratulated on the successes it has achieved.

  1. As with the other general call centre number for the CIPC, NO ONE ANSWERS THIS NUMBER… getting rather fed up and frustrated now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks for naught!

  2. Are you sure there are people in this call center? It makes no difference if one calls early in the morning, midday or afternoon, NOBODY ANSWERS! Found myself yearning for the irritating “you are number 105 in the queue” voice. At least with that you have an idea of what is happening and how far you are. Unlike where there is not even an interrupting voice that lets you know that you are at least not in ghost town.

  3. Thank you, CIPC is a very frustrating department where our problems can’t be attended to. You hold a phone for 30 minutes and no one answers.

  4. I bought R110 airtime and I tried calling Cipc and nobody answers this number,is just an answering machine apologising for the delay in answering our calls.Poorest service ever and my airtime got finished just listening to the machine. How does one get hold of your offices as you don’t respond to emails either???????????????????

  5. I have been trying to lodge a query with CIPC, but my logging credentials are not accepted. I am able to log in to the web site when doing other things. I have also been trying to call using the telephone numbers; 086 100 2472 and 084 196 4475 but am not getting through. I just do know what else to do to contact CIPC.

  6. I have been trying to register a new company since Wednesday. I have also called CIPC call centre numerous times and no response was received.

Unfortunately the CIPC system is not allowing me to capture the directors information and continue with the registration of the company.
Kindly restore the fault on “REGISTER A NEW COMPANY” option – as this problem is becoming tiresome and our clients are getting impatient.

Please advise if there’s a way that I can manually submit documents to register a new company as this is very urgent.
What documents would you require from me for this manual lodgement??
